The English Governess at the Siamese Court

The English Governess at the Siamese Court

Anna Leonowens taught the wives and children of King Mongkut, Rama IV, in the royal palace from 1862 to 1868. The children included the revered in Thailand, future King Chulalongkorn, Rama V. This book was the first of two she wrote about this experience.

In many ways the book is unfairly criticized because, although it's true that some stories were highlighted to please the publisher, it doesn't stop it from being a valuable historical record of King Mongkut's court.

Much of the criticism is more to do with the later novel, Anna and the King of Siam, by Margaret Landon upon which the musical and movie, The King and I, was based.
